Suggestions being offered by the IWC Chairman’s Support Group of Members for the future of the Commission include deletion of Schedule Paragraphs 10a, 10b and 10c (which define the New Management Procedure adopted by the Commission in 1975 on the basis of a derailed Resolution adopted in 1974) and also of Tables 1, 2 and 3 in the Schedule.  Those tables give annual or multi-annual catch limits by species and areas and for each nominal “management stock” it classification in one or three categories – or, if “unclassified” stocks are counted, four categories. In a subsequent decision of 1994, establishing the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary (SOWS) it is stated that the decision to prohibit the taking of whales in the sanctuary “applies irrespective of the conservation status of baleen and toothed whale stocks in the sanctuary as may from time to time be determined by the Commission”.

FCO Statement: Thursday 1 April 2010  :                                       
Foreign Secretary David Miliband today announced the creation of a Marine Protected Area (MPA) in the British Indian Ocean Territory. This will include a “no-take” marine reserve where commercial fishing will be banned. 
The British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) consists of 55 tiny islands which sit in a quarter of a million square miles of the world’s cleanest seas.
